Polo
has been termed the “sport of kings”, or sometimes
the “king of sports”. The challenge of the
game is to combine highly skilled athletic ability and horsemanship
with the efforts of super trained mounts. The polo pony
is selected carefully for great speed and stamina, similar
to the thoroughbreds at race tracks, as well as agility and
maneuverability, similar to the cow pony used on ranches. It
is the terrific speed combined with body contact and the darting
turns of the horses which gives polo its appeal to spectator
and players alike. The purpose of the game of polo is to score
more goals than the opposing team by hitting the ball through
the opposing team’s goal posts while riding on the
back of a galloping thoroughbred horse. It is kind of soccer
on horseback!
Polo
is an ancient game thought to have originated in the Eastern
countries of Persia and China about 2,000 years ago.
Polo
is often played in a huge outdoor arena on grass. Our polo
event is arena polo, which is played on dirt and in a smaller
area with three players on each team rather than four. We
will also have the luxury of being seated on bleachers for
a great view of the play.
The
players at this event, and their polo ponies, come mostly
from the Northern California area. They play at various polo
venues throughout the year, and invite interested potential
players to contact them after the event.
The Polo Announcer will be long time polo player and well-known
polo announcer, STEVE MUNI. Steve
started playing polo as a child, continuing through the Manila
Polo Club in the Philippines, prep school in Hawaii, and Yale while
in college. He has played for polo clubs in San Diego, London,
and Pebble Beach. He retired from active play in 1990 and continues
to umpire and announce polo matches. He will enrich the Polo
Experience while he shares his knowledge and experience with the
game.
